New Vacancy

A strange emptiness characterizes the new developments that turn dusty washes into leafy suburban neighborhoods. The new cultural centers are expansive and sparsely populated. Sleek newness is permeated by a fine layer of silt. Acres await throngs that never come. Places of congregation are ordained by development enterprises with vested interests in drawing us into their voids. Here we wait for others to follow, hoping for a sense of belonging too vast to be provided to us by a community complex drafted and constructed with the intent of making somewhere a place with a purpose.
